Muted may be the quietest piece ever written for violin, but it was riveting in this intimately powerful performance.

New York Times

“I’m going to write you a piece so soft, I don’t care if no one can hear it.”

This was composer Michael Gordon’s response to Monica Germino’s news that she would have to protect her hearing by stopping or adapting how she played the violin.

Inspired by Germino’s strength and determination, four of the world’s leading composers – Michael Gordon, Julia Wolfe and David Lang (co-founders of Bang on a Can) and legendary composer Louis Andriessen – joined forces to create MUTED. This collective composition features what Germino calls ‘whisperviolin’ along with custom-made instruments, mutes, and Monica’s speaking and singing voice (in settings of text from the 1930’s New York Post cult column Archy and Mehitabel).

For MUTED, lighting designer Floriaan Ganzevoort has created a light sculpture that glows and radiates with the music and focusses our listening.

At turns humorous, touching, mysterious, and filled with warmth, this is a performance that is hypnotizing and transcendent, designed especially for small groups of listeners in intimate spaces.

This performance is presented in partnership with the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival.

MUTED is presented by De Doelen Rotterdam (executive producer), New York Philharmonic OrchestraOranjewoud Festival, Music on Main, and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

With the support of Dutch Performing Arts.
