City of Vancouver announces new performing and media arts cultural hub, downtown at CBC Building

On February 5, 2014, the City of Vancouver and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation announced a unique cultural amenity space that will benefit Vancouver arts makers for the next 30 years. The PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, Touchstone Theatre, DOXA Documentary Film Festival, and Music on Main have been selected to occupy and animate a new 8,477 square foot performing and media arts cultural hub. Located at 750 Hamilton Street in downtown Vancouver, the space will include offices, meeting rooms, and a rehearsal studio. The four companies expect to move into the new space in the fall of 2014. Cellar Jazz Club to close February 25, 2014

Owner Cory Weeds has announced that The Cellar Restaurant & Jazz Club is closing its doors following Music on Main’s February 25, 2014 concert with pianist Eve Egoyan. You can read more on Cory’s blog. All four of Music on Main’s February 2014 concerts will take place as planned. Artistic Director David Pay, the Music on Main team, and co-presenters Early Music Vancouver are actively looking for new venues. We’re all committed to ensuring that informal but serious-about-listening environments will be found for our March 2014 concerts and beyond. Stay tuned for more details.
Yasunoshin Morita wins 2013 ISCM Young Composer Award in partnership with Music on Main

Japanese composer Yasunoshin Morita has won this year’s International Society for Contemporary Music Young Composer Award. Presented in partnership with Vancouver’s Music on Main, the prize includes a commission for the 2015 World New Music Days in Slovenia. Morita’s winning piece, The History of Songs & Words for choir was performed in Vienna on November 13, 2013 during this year’s World New Music Days. For the first time, Music on Main has teamed up with ISCM to present this commissioning award to a young composer. The 2013 festival took place November 4-14 in Slovakia and Austria with more than 30 pieces by composers under the age of 35 performed. The 2014 World New Music Days will take place in Wrocław, Poland from October 3-12, 2014.
Music on Main welcomes Erica McLachlin!

Erica is a familiar face to Music on Main audiences from her time working as an intern, when she designed and implemented our audience surveys. Now she’s the new Audience Service Manager, helping audience members with ticketing and other needs. Originally from Ontario, Erica is a musician and administrator who moved to Vancouver to study in the Arts & Entertainment Management program at Capilano University. We’re delighted to have her on board!
