…an incredible example of a social statement made clearly audible in music

Corey Hamm

Join Music on Main for Opening Night of the 10th Modulus Festival, and listen together to powerful music.

There’s a sense of urgency when Corey Hamm performs Frederic Rzewski’s “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!”  Composer and iconoclast Rzewski embraced counter culture and protest songs throughout his celebrated career. His 1975 sensation for solo piano takes the Chilean song “¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!” and transforms it through 36 powerful variations.  Listen closely, and you’ll hear — and feel — more after-vibrations from the piano than you’d ever expect.

Pianist Corey Hamm’s recording of this one-hour masterpiece won “Classical Recording of the Year” at the 2014 Western Canadian Music Awards.  Reflecting on the origins and power of Rzewski’s music, Hamm says this piece is “an incredible example of a social statement made clearly audible in music without any words, and it serves as the perfect work to gather us together after so long apart during the pandemic.”

Corey has performed “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!” more than eighty times all over the world, including for the late Frederic Rzewski himself. Don’t miss this chance to hear this powerful piece of music, live and in person.

One night only. Tickets selling quickly.

This concert has been generously supported by Jim and Lisa Peers.

The grand piano appearing in this concert has been generously provided by Showcase Pianos | FAZIOLI.
