Celebrating the Music of Dorothy Chang

Described as “evocative and kaleidoscopic” and “beautiful and gripping,” the music of JUNO-nominated composer Dorothy Chang reflects a wide range of influences and is often inspired by place, memory, and questions of cultural identity. While diverse in style, her works are united by a deeply human quality, offering listeners sounds that are both imaginative and moving.

The concert takes its title from Shelter, a work written during the pandemic and inspired by the idea of silver linings. From there, the program unfolds into a wide range of moods and experiences: the playful energy of Automata for two flutes and kick drums; the whimsical, ephemeral, and virtuosic contrasts of Five and Bagatelles; and quiet, meditative sounds in Waiting. Together, the evening traces an emotional journey that reflects the wide spectrum of human emotions and experiences.

An extraordinary ensemble brings Chang’s music to life: harpist Janelle Nadeau, flutists Mark Takeshi McGregor and Paolo Bortolussi, pianist Nicole Linaksita, and cellist Jonathan Lo, each acclaimed for their artistry and expressive power and representing the richness of Vancouver’s musical community.

Join us for an afternoon that celebrates Dorothy Chang’s remarkable ability to blend culture, complexity, and emotion, brought to life by some of Vancouver’s most compelling performers.
