Joëlle Léandre is a French double bassist, vocalist and composer active in new music and free improvisation born in Aix-en-Provence, France. Joëlle is regarded as one of Europe’s most gifted and versatile avant garde bassists. In the field of contemporary music, she has performed with Pierre Boulez’s Ensemble InterContemporain, and worked with Merce Cunningham and John Cage. Both Cage and Giacinto Scelsi have composed works specifically for her. Léandre recorded works by Cage and Scelsi and performed in a number of new music ensembles including 2E2M and l’Ensemble Intercontemporain.
