Celebrate Music on Main’s 100th concert with Lisa Bielawa‘s Chance Encounter for soprano Susan Narucki and twelve instrumentalists.

3:00 PM | Lisa Bielawa‘s Chance Encounter has captivated audiences in Manhattan parks, at New York’s Whitney Museum, outside the Zaha Hadid-designed MAXII museum, on the banks of the Tiber River in Rome and in Venice. Hear the Canadian debut, outdoors at the Roundhouse.

Lisa writes that Chance Encounter “is designed so that it is not prescribed where and how the audience should or might sit to enjoy the music. The musicians are in two separate locations, approximately half a city block away from each other.

“They arrive one or two at a time, over the course of seven minutes, so that it is not clear exactly when the performance has officially begun. Similarly, at the end of the 35-minute piece, performers leave one or several at a time, so that when the piece is over, there are no musicians present.

“The soprano’s sung ‘libretto’ is comprised entirely of utterances that Susan and I overheard over the course of a full year of travel, in transient public spaces around the world – Rome, Taipei, Anchorage, Salzburg, Dallas and beyond.”

For the Canadian debut, Grammy Award-winning soprano Susan Narucki is joined by the Music on Main All-Star Band, outdoors at the Roundhouse Community Arts Centre at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 3, 2010.

Note: In case of inclement weather, the performance will take place indoors at the Roundhouse.
